Transcending the boundaries of genre, composer/percussionist Lukas Ligeti — son of legendary 20th composer Gyorgy Ligeti —has developed a musical style of his own that draws upon downtown New York experimentalism, contemporary classical music, jazz, electronica, as well as world music, particularly from Africa. Known for his non-conformity and diverse interests, Lukas creates music ranging from the through-composed to the free-improvised, often exploring polyrhythmic/polytempo structures, non-tempered tunings, and non-Western elements. He has also been participating in cultural exchange projects in Africa for the past 15 years. Lukas’ concert music has been commissioned by the American Composers Orchestra, Bang on a Can, Vienna Festwochen, and the Kronos Quartet, to name a few. He frequently performs solo on electronic percussion, and as a drummer, co-leads several bands including Burkina Electric, the first electronica band from Burkina Faso in West Africa. Lukas has also performed/recorded with, John Zorn, Henry Kaiser, Raoul Björkenheim, Marilyn Crispell, Jim O’Rourke, Gary Lucas, John Tchicai, and members of CCMC. His most recent solo recording is entitled Afrikan Machinery (Tzadik, 2008). At this concert, he will be performing solo percussion as well as the rare electronic instrument, the marimba lumina. www.myspace.com/lukasligeti
Princess Century
Maya Postepski, a.k.a. Princess Century, is an enthusiastic and passionate percussionist, composer and performer. Primarily a drum set player, Maya had a strong desire to broaden her knowledge of the entire percussion world and studied percussion at the University of Toronto under members of NEXUS, the Toronto Symphony and Beverley Johnston. She also enjoyed studying Balinese Gamelan, Japanese Taiko, African Gahu drum and dance. Her strong interest in collaborating with artists in other disciplines has taken her young career as a local musician to a variety performing situations. Maya has been called on tours with Katie Stelmanis, The Organ, Bruce Peninsula and Emm Gryner. Currently, she is working on the second record for her solo project, Princess Century. This new project combines the recorded material that she composes in her home studio with live percussion, vocals, videos and projections.
