New Music Arts Projects presents:
The 11th Finger – Jenny Lin in Recital
8pm • $25 regular; $20 member + senior; $15 students (tickets at ticketweb.ca or at the door)
Recital by New York-based pianist Jenny Lin, featuring works of Randy Nordschow (Detail of Beethoven’s Hair, 2002), Claude Vivier (Shiraz, 1977), Arthur Kampela (Nosturnos, 1993/2003), James Tenney (Chromatic Canon for piano and tape, 1980/83), and MC Maguire (A Short History of Lounge, 2001).
Jenny Lin is one of the most respected young pianists today, admired for her adventurous programming and charismatic stage presence. She continues to receive accolades worldwide as an orchestral soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician. The New York Times writes: "No one who has heard [her] will need to be told that Ms. Lin has a gift for melodic flow" and "remarkable technical command", the Washington Post praises "Lin’s confident fingers... spectacular technique..." and Gramophone magazine has hailed her as "an exceptionally sensitive pianist". In this concert, she will pay homage to the works of two great Canadian composers: "Chromatic Canon" by James Tenney is a minimalist piece in which Lin plays both live and along with a tape of herself playing another part; it is a hypnotic arc of music filled with itchy dissonances. Claude Vivier's "Shiraz" is based on a four-note chord pounded away into dozens of alternate-sounding configurations.
