“If Art Tatum took up classical music seriously, I’d quit my job the next day.”
 – Vladimir Horowitz

TEA FOR TWO is inspired by the fabled friendship of classical piano virtuoso Vladimir Horowitz and jazz piano monster Art Tatum. The two shared a deep mutual admiration for one another, but after a round of musical show-and-tell in which they each played their own arrangements of “Tea for Two” (one improvised on the spot, the other toiled over for weeks), Horowitz vowed never to play it in public again.

Exploring this idea of mastery that knows no bounds of genre or context, we will pit classical wizards against their popular/jazz/improvised-music counterparts.  Featuring Jazz Pianist Chris Donnely (Myriad3) vs. Classical pianist Ryan MacEvoy McCullough (who will both tip their hats to that now-infamous jazz standard) as well as improvising vocalist Christine Duncan vs. indie-folk artist Alex Lukashevsky vs. classical soprano Lucy Fitz Gibbon, each performing their particular takes on a handful of traditional folk songs.
